Saturday I went to NYC with Craig's sister Becca and his mom... We did a girl's trip to see Legally Blonde: The Musical. It was awesome... We had a great day. We took a bus through his mom's work... The ride down was pretty cool, we just talked and chilled out... When we got there we did some shopping (in the gross humid heat) on Canal Street and then had a super yummy lunch at a place in Little Italy... Then we headed up to the show... The girl who played Elle Woods looked JUST LIKE Reese Witherspoon and sounded like her too - and she was the understudy for the actual "star" of the show. I thought she was pretty awesome though. Anyway, it was great. After the show we had a little bit of time to get something to eat and walk around Times Square a little... Then we went to meet the bus. It left at around quarter of 6.
We had been on the bus for about 20 minutes or so, we'd just gotten out of the GHETTO and onto the highway... and the bus STALLED in traffic. Of course everyone was thinking "oh sh*t"... Then it started up... but I knew, we're in trouble. Luckily the driver got it going enough to get us off the highway and pull over... We were in the Bronx, off 95, and stopped by a big park off the exit... There were a bunch of benches and it was a safe, open area... Had we stalled out 5 minutes earlier we would have been in DEEP trouble. Not to be nasty, but there is no way I would have mentally survived a breakdown in the hood. We were saying how scary the area was we were driving through... trash everywhere, groups of guys just hanging out on the street looking extremely scary... half the places had broken windows, trashed cars all over the streets... I doubt the police would have even come to rescue us where we were... So yeah, when people started getting really frustrated with the situation, I reminded them "it could have been worse!!"
We ended up having to wait almost 3 hours for another bus to come get us - from South Windsor! It's a local company so they had to send one of their drivers to come pick us up... We seriously just sat on benches in the nasty heat for HOURS... When I talked to Kyla on the phone she kept asking me "did the bus fall apart mama? What part of the bus is broken? Do you need us to come get you? How will you get home? Why did the bus break? Where are you?" It was so cute... She's such a little sweetheart, and so smart it's ridiculous!!!
Right after the bus driver gave us an ETA of 30 minutes for the other bus to be there to get us, we started seeing lightning... as it got worse and the thunder got louder, more and more people started getting back on the steamy hot bus... The driver opened the windows but it was still SWELTERING...
When the other bus finally got there we had to stop about 10 miles down the road because a lot of people didn't have drinks with them (we did) so he asked that anyone who needed to go in to use the restroom or get a drink be quick so we could get on our way... yeah, 45 minutes later the last people got back on the bus with their McDonalds dinners and ice creams... So much for a quick stop!!
We finally got home around midnight... We had a really good day, but the bus breaking down was not the way to end it!!!
The next morning I had to get up and we took the kids to see The Backyardigans... It was pretty good, but to be honest those shows just don't keep the kids all that entertained. The Sesame Street ones are a lot brighter and amusing. They had fun though... and I'd also seen an awesome Broadway show the day before so Backyardigans frolicking around on stage couldn't live up anyway...
Next weekend it's The Wiggles at Six Flags... there's a big group of us going so it should be a blast. I just hope it's not quite as freaking hot!!!
